Cultural content in culinary names within Polish and German translation practice

Summary/Abstract: This text presents a translation analysis of the so called "realia", which are part of culinary names rendered from Polish into German. The basis consists of the Polish culinary names which can be found on genuine menus and their translation found on Internet websites. The renditions proposed on the menus are compared with their equivalents provided in bilingual dictionairies. The point of departure for the analysis is Koller (2004). Due to the great diversity of strategies applied in the translation of culinary names, it is possible to indicate those which ought to be utilized in the translation of realia. The conducted analysis highlights the vital aspects and role of cultural competence in translation and translator education.
