Summary/Abstract: Nautical dictionaries in the period of Enlightenment have significantly contributed to the spread of maritime terminology in the society. For example the multilingual dictionary „Allgemeines Wörterbuches der Marine“ by Johann Hinrich Roding contains approximately 5000 lexicographic entries - including 106 phrasemes used by sailors, shipbuilders or waterfront workers. The aim of this article is to answer following questions: What kind of phrasemes from which subject areas are included in this work? How important are the phrasemes in the macro- and microstructure of the dictionary? How does the author describe and explain their meaning? And finally - are these expressions still used in the contemporary German language or to what extent did the technological and social transformations cause their decline?
