Regional disparities indicators in selected countries of the European Union

Summary/Abstract: Identification and measurement of regional differences is fundamental for the programming of the policy which reduces the socio-economic disparities between areas. There is a number of approaches in the European Union which function to identify specific areas that need the properly oriented public policy. This reflects the different views in the European Union and not only about a distance problem that requires targeted interventions of the state. Different approaches for determining the areas under the public intervention is the result of different selections of indicators to identify the problem, priorities, or joining the results of this analyze. It should be also mentioned that public interventions are also the result of political decisions. In this article the author examines some problems and difficulties that arise in measuring the disparities in development, in particular: - what the differences are of the interest of public intervention? - what indicators can be used to measure the identified disparities?
