The Commemoration of Stephen the Great (and His Successors) at the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. A Necessary Emendation

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to correct and complete some data that the author presented in his previous article published in “Analele Putnei”, VII, 2011, 1. More precisely, a new and more attentive reading of the HSMS 510, a diptych of the Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos, revealed the date when Prince Stephen the Great of Moldavia made his first donation to Hilandar: the 27th of July 1466. It is sure now that this donation was made at the same time as those to two of the holy places Stephen cherished the most: Zographou, “his monastery”, and Probota, the burial place of his mother. This fact suggests that the prince considered the Serbian lavra a bastion of Orthodoxy as the two aforementioned monasteries or as Putna, where he had just laid the foundation stone. The second part of the article is devoted to the relationships between Prince Alexandru Lăpuşneanu and Hilandar. On the basis of the documents preserved in the Russian archives, published by S. N. Kashtanov and analyzed by Vera G. Tchentzova, a new hypothesis is formulated concerning the dating of the diptych contained in the HSMS 510. This document was maybe written in 1558, in the context of the exchanges between Mount Athos (Hilandar included) and Moscow, via Moldavia. The available data also lead to the conclusion that a kind of “competition” existed between the Muscovite tsar Ivan the Terrible and the Moldavian and Wallachian Princes in their attempts to be recognized as protectors of the Serbian lavra.
