Summary/Abstract: The point of departure for Iwona Kurz's article is Ryszard Siwiec's act of self-immolation at the 10th-Anniversary Stadium during the state celbrations of the harvest festival. The author analyses the possible reasons for which Siwiec's deed, even though it definitely took place in front of many people gathered at the Stadium, was neither noticed nor remebered. Kurz describes the forms of communal manifestations offered both by the government and the Catholic church, showing that Siwiec's disconcerting act does not fit within their frameworks.
