Summary/Abstract: The obligation of non-refoulement is found in Art. 33 of the Convention on the Status of Refugees; it binds states with an obligation to restrain from returning a refugee to a state where his life or freedom might be threatened. Therefore, any thinkable act and form of return, expulsion and extradition, by both judicial and administrative authorities, is prohibited. The principle of non-refoulement is one of the key principles in international refugee law, and it reflects the efforts of the international community to ensure that everyone enjoy human rights; however, it is sometimes overlooked in an attempt to adopt "push-back" policies against refugees.
