Summary/Abstract: In this brief study, the author aims analyse the modern history of continental Europe in order to identify the steps that led to the emergence of democratic regimes and the risks that they face today. The research hypothesis is that great historical cycles are followed by periods of great social and political unrest that may lead to violent revolutionary movements. French Revolution of 1789, the Great Bolshevik Revolution of September 1917, or the rise of national-socialist fascist regimes in Europe are clear examples that confirm this hypothesis. In what regards the contemporary age, the author identified the crisis of the welfare state and international migration as the major risks faced by democratic regimes. Nazi-based or fascist parties have emerged in many European countries, along with anti-European political movements which rise against migrants and make use of xenophobic and anti-Semitic discourse.
