VOLUNTARY CHILDLESSNESS AND THE CHANGE OF GENDER IDENTITY OF CONTEMPORARY WOMEN AND MEN

Summary/Abstract: The article dicusses the issue of the causes of voluntary childlessness in Poland from the gender perspective. It is an attempt to explore the micro-social determinants (how men and women understand and fulfill the concepts of masculinity and feminity) of remaining childless. The first part of the article includes an analysis of the socio-cultural context in studies on intentional childlessness. The latter part of the paper presents key findings from focus group interviews and in-depth interviews conducted with childless people (married men and women). The results obtained show a change in the gender identity scripts. However, that women (just more frequently than men) reinterpret the definition of femininity/masculinity questioning the parental role.
