FAMILIES OF CHOICE. SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIPS AS A MODERN ALTERNATIVE TO FAMILY – CASE STUDY

Summary/Abstract: Same-sex family as an alternative to a traditional family model is the core subject of the article. Analyses presented in the first part of the text focus on the circumstances in which such a form of a family has emerged in Western societies and in Poland. These analyses were made in the context of changes of lifestyles, sexuality and interpersonal relations between partners. These factors influenced emerging of same-sex family as a topic of public discourse. Outcomes of the author’s research aimed at depicting everyday life of the same-sex families participating in the study, supplement these deliberations. The research was carried out with the use of individual in-depth interviews conducted with members of three same-sex families. The study showed that its participants did not expect acceptance of the family model they had chosen. They claimed that their relationships did not differ from other forms of family life. The interviewees were mostly focused on bonding with children, raising them and performing daily activities.
