Summary/Abstract: KGHM Polska Miedź S.A is one of the most important 10 producers of copper in the word and takes the first place in production of silver. The endeavour to keep the position in this rating, which in previous years was lowered and also such reasons as: decrease of unit costs of production; diversification of metals, currencies and location of business in order to reduce the risk of activity; access to the most modern world technologies, especially referring to open-cast mining; increase of profits, caused that the corporation started foreign expansion. The first attempt, which failed, was undertaken in Zair (currently the Democratic Republic of Kongo) in 1998. After a long break lasting 9 years KGHM returned to invest abroad and purchased 80% shares in a small deposit of copper and gold of Afton Ajax in Canada. However, KGHM became a global corporation only after the transaction of purchase of a medium worldwide size producer of copper − Quadra FNX in Vancouver in Canada in 2012. Thanks to this transaction KGHM will be able to increase its annual production up to 700 thousand tons and thus to keep its high position in the rating of copper manufactures.
