Summary/Abstract: Succession processes in the economic practice of Poland are a new phenomenon. The first phase of the processes has only just begun. The scientific research on this phenomenon is therefore at a relatively early stage with the identification of the phenomenon not being fully clear yet. The aim of the study, whose results are presented here, was not only to contribute to expanding the research and provide knowledge about succession models and the conditions for their selection, but also to provide a research tool that would allow for the continuation of this kind of studies where it would be possible to compare results. It was recognized that the theoretical basis that would enable us to conduct the research with thus defined objectives was social exchange theory. Treating the succession process as an exchange process between interested parties provides us with new opportunities for explicating both the very process and the phenomenon of family enterprises in general.
