Summary/Abstract: Since the beginning of 19th century, performances on paper theatres became an increasingly vivid part of bourgeois theatre culture. Paper stages and characters were produced as followers of different earlier medial devices, as for instance a movable book. Today pop-up books have partially adapted forms and functions of paper theatres. A few examples of books combining elements of paper theatres with engineering techniques of pop-up books will illustrate exemplarily the variety of forms – books that stage world literature classics from Shakespeare and Lewis Carroll and combine both didactic and playful elements.
