Summary/Abstract: Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) was adopted in the Europe 2020 Strategy with its objectives of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Smart specialisation is a regional policy framework for innovation driven growth. RIS3 are integrated economic transformation agendas. They focuse on each region's strengths, competitive advantages and potential for excellence. The concept of smart specialisation allows regions to concentrate the resources on limited number of priority economic activities and became competitive in the global economy. Smart Specialisation is based on unique assets and capabilities generated by the region's specific industry structures and intellectual capital. The article presents the theoretical aspect of the concept of smart specialization and gives an overview of smart specialization identified in the polish regions. The aim of this article is to identify the adequacy of implementation of the smart specialization concept as a stimulator of economic growth.
