Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of regional migrations in the Astrakhan District – a region of the Russian Federation particularly important from the point of view of the Moscow centre. On one hand, the Astrakhan District is the starting point for the implementation of Russia’s geopolitical plans which are directed towards the Caucasus and Caspian regions. On the other hand, it is a part of a range of territories inhabited by Muslim peoples which stretches from the Caucasus, through the Volga region, all the way to Central Asia. The case of the Astrakhan District shows that the central authorities are not capable of preventing the negative results of an uncontrolled migration of people. It also shows the ethnic-religious structure of the region is changing.
