Summary/Abstract: Kibyōshi represented the best milieu for SantōKyōden (1761-1816) to express his skills as a writer and as an illustrator. Verbal and visual elements blend together in a kibyōshi to tell a story that amuses the reader, who in this case also becomes the viewer. The topic of this paper focuses on how these two elements combine in various ways.
