Summary/Abstract: Innovative, enlightened and influenced by the moderate yet elitist Liberalism of the early 19th century, the Organic Regulations of Wallachia and Moldavia (fundamental laws in vigour from 1834 to 1856) are still in need to be thoroughly understood. Despite representing one of the most important steps in Romania’s Europeanisation process, by modernising State and society, their critics focused on the Russian influence and seem to have overlooked the political and diplomatic context that shaped the institutional and legislative outcome of the Regulations, ultimately meant to create stability and prosperity in both countries.
