Summary/Abstract: Waluszko observes that history is not literature – its image is constructed with reference to facts rather than other opinions. Neither serfdom nor the dearth of cities and industry had an impact on the system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or its fall (Poland’sinvaders were equally backward); then came the domestic “cold war” between the Polish gentry and kings, which only benefitted the magnates and higher nobility that those had created. The gentry was “at fault” for not staging a bloody revolution. But can that be the foundation for liberty? The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth represents the Poles’ greatest and (compared to the Second Polish Republic or the Polish People’s Republic) most long-lasting creation, a “realized utopia”, an intermediate stage of our continually torn and renewed line of transfer from Slavic culture through Sarmatism through the Romantics’ and Modernists’ philosophy of action, to the Solidarity movement.
