Summary/Abstract: The film of P.S. Lungin “Tsar” has caused a fierce debate in the press and the Internet. The author of the article provides an analysis of the publications of the participants, who condemned this picture as ideologically harmful and dangerous. These critics saw the film not as a work of art, but as a textbook on the history of Muscovy 16th century. They praised Ivan the Terrible as an autocrat, strengthen the monarchical power and as a tsar-democrat; called him a defender of the Russian Orthodox Church and compared him with the I.V.Stalin. They also denied oprichnina terror, disastrous consequences of the Livonian War and internal policies of 60–70th 16th century. Despite the differences in political views, critics acted consistently. This is evidenced by their slogan “unreal” “Tsar” and a set of repeats in their articles and interviews.
