Summary/Abstract: This article looks at Alexis de Tocqueville’s reflection on the place of religion in society; strictly speaking the significance of religion in a democratic society. This problem is taken up from two perspectives: from an existential point of view and from a social point of view. In the existential dimension, religion (Christianity) is seen as a natural condition of mankind. In the social dimension, religion is vital to the proper functioning of a society and the preservation of political freedom.
