Summary/Abstract: The article aims at overcoming an opposition, omnipresent in modern media and communication theory, between printed text and image by pointing to their close historical connections and mutual interdependencies. The author claims that from its onset the book has been an amalgam of numerous media. He recounts the history of the invention of print and its subsequent fate, its relations with painting, influence of mathematic and geometric thinking on the development of book, points to some important links between the painterly perspective and the need for reproduction of drafting. He also stresses the importance of print and linear perspective in the development of Western civilization, its modern, digital incarnations and the out-of-dateness of the culture-technology opposition.
