Summary/Abstract: Kashubians are an ethnic minority living in northern regions of Poland. Their identity is determined by three main factors: their language, territory and heritage. Those factors drive numerous concerted efforts to shape this group identity. There are two major players initiating those efforts: Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko-Pomorskie (Kashubian-Pomorskie Association) and Kaszëbskô Jednota (Kashubian Unity). The first organization emphasizes the Polish-Kashubian identity, while the other strives to have Kashubians recognized as a nation and takes actions centered on creating a national Kashubian group identity. This article focuses on the many endeavors of those organizations undertaken to sustain and create Kashubianess (both of them understand this term differently). Meanwhile, today’s Kashubian identity is not binary; it’s a hybridized fringe identity with elements from several different cultures.
