Summary/Abstract: In this article the author proposes an analysis of the situation of representing the dominated, which is one of the strategies used in the public art movement. The aim of such a strategy is to re-construct public space and renewing democracy. The tensions inherent in this strategy are shown on the example of works by Krzysztof Wodiczko, a well-known Polish artist, who consequentially uses the strategy of representation in order to help e.g. victims of domestic violence and immigrants. The main issues are, first of all – who is the author of the message: the artist or the dominated? Secondly, to what extent can the dominated formulate their message autonomously? Third, who can be the recipient of public art: the whole society, the dominant groups or the participants of the projects? In spite of many ambiguities it seems that representation is the only way, in which members of underprivileged groups can come into being in the public sphere.
