Summary/Abstract: Regional studies are strongly related with the United Kingdom, which has one of the richest experience in the of regional policy. Despite of this fact, there are only few projects examining Wales in comparison with Italy, Germany or Ireland. This research focuses on the regional disparities of Wales based on a long-term territorial development and their effects of the recent spatial structure of the region. The analysis emphasizes the importance of geographical features taking shape of the main economic nodes, infrastructure system and centrumperiphery relations. After introducing the key aspects of the territorial structure the paper summarizes briefly the role of the regional policy in the latest territorial processes.
