Summary/Abstract: Decreasing the cash in circulation is an important goal of macroeconomic policy. Cash in circulation generates huge costs and supports the development of the shadow economy. A main area in which cash is used is payments made by customers. The aim of the article is to grade customer payment habits (including their attitudes towards cash) and to check their willingness to move to cashless payments. The survey confirmed the strong attachment to cash and proved that it is thought to be the cheapest and most convenient payment instrument. Customers were much more critical in assessing the safety and speed of cash payments. Despite noting the advantages of alternative payment instruments, including innovative ones, consumers’ willingness to shift their payment habits from cash to alternative cashless instruments was low.
