Summary/Abstract: One of the ways of activating a regional economy where there is a desire to support development is to establish certain privileges for commercial interests operating in the said area. The idea of ‘special economic zones’ was primarily developed in Poland for the purpose of attracting industrial interests to these special zones and thereby supporting economic expansion. Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are a regional, political tool whose purpose is to spur economic growth in a given region. The active entrepreneur within the zone takes advantage of public assistance which is granted in the form of income tax exemptions resulting from the new investments or creation of new jobs. Poland has 14 functioning zones which, based on current regulations, will continue to operate at least until the end of 2026. The possession of these sanctioned zones is for many local governmental units one of the more important tools for attracting investments. This examination focuses on what role special economic zones play in increasing a region’s investment attraction and an assessment of the zones’ influence on its expansion.
