Summary/Abstract: The author discusses a phenomenon of literature in contemporary world, stressing the role of media in the media society and the influence of such a society on art and its various forms. It is claimed that the transformation of the digital media era is related to a basic problem of literature’s (inter)mediality. The author points to one of the sources of the crisis of traditional literary studies discourse – persistence of mono-media studies – and stresses the need for a new form of literary scholarship which would address the question of orality, literacy, hypertextuality, and (inter)mediality. His argument is based on the conviction that the study of media society should not be left to the media scholars, communication reserachers or to sociologists, but that it should be of interest to literary studies, especially cultural comparative studies
