Summary/Abstract: Wojciech Gerson’s and Leon Wyczółkowski’s paintings inspired by Juliusz Słowacki’s Balladyna in the process of analysis were turned out to be the works interpretationrather than illustration. They depict scenes absent from the literary text and force one to revise his or her understanding. The way the painters present the characters and the organization of the setting allows for a different evaluation of Słowacki’s protagonists, who seem to be even more complex than as interpreted by the literary scholars. Such a reading of the play through a pictorial medium has been confirmed in their intertextual relations with other works of art.
