Summary/Abstract: Polyphonic songs — sutartinės — are a genre of Lithuanian folklore characterised by a distinctive musical language. The article examines the structural characteristics of sutartinės and the musical language features (characteristic scales and rhythm), and aims to reveal the options for its use in primary school music education methodology. It is appropriate to rely on a narrow range of melodies of sutartinės and elementary rhythm patterns in the initial stages of learning musical notes and solfeggio, while uncomplicated polyphonic forms are the basis for teaching primary skills in ensemble music. Based on the material of sutartinės, schoolchildren can be introduced to the elementary principles of elementary musical composing principles.
