Summary/Abstract: The desire to maintain financial stability is an important element for the functioning of countries in times of economic crisis. Widely discussed remain questions about the entity responsible for maintaining the financial stability of the state as well as about the indication of the conditions for its achievement. This paper presents the role of the Polish National Bank in building financial stability in Poland. There is highlighted the distinction among the concepts of: monetary stability, financial stability, financial stability system, monetary policy and payment systems. The paper emphasizes the role of the Central Bank to maintain stability not only in banking but also on the broader financial market. For this purpose, the Polish National Bank has completed a set of specific tasks. The attention was drawn to the Central Bank as an independent institution, fulfilling important functions in the state. Therefore, its role consists in maintaining an appropriate level of inflation and the right market conditions. The Polish National Bank is the body responsible for setting monetary policy as well as for the use of the socalled monetary policy instruments. The article also emphasizes that the Central Bank engages in activities undertaken for financial stability since it cares about the safety and efficiency of the payment system. It has been assumed that the Central Bank acts as a supervisor of the payment systems. Stabilizing the value of money today plays a key role in establishing monetary policy. However, even if price solidity and financial stability are ecessary conditions for themselves, they are not the only ones. Central banking faces many challenges and its role and tasks will be still studied and discussed.
