Summary/Abstract: In order to write a dissertation, students must first determine their interest area and then narrow it down to the specific subject to be researched. The present article advocates for an early identification of the larger area of interest of students along with a meta-cognitive exercise that leads them to distinguish more easily the subject that responds to their values, their personal and professional experience and their hopes and plans, as they gather related information from each course they attend. This is illustrated with a personal example from the Masters of Alternative Pedagogies and Dramatic Art. The metacognitive analysis is enlaced with the quest for the profile of the ideal teacher. The purpose of the study is not necessarily to find answers, but mostly to find new questions that would startle students to embark on an in-depth research work. Most of all, it is tremendously important for students to invest themselves in their work.
