Summary/Abstract: The study aims to describe the everyday life of the citizens of Bucharest during the 4th World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship, held in August 1953. The article focuses on the food shortages that the regime organized in order to obtain its main purpose: propaganda. Even with the Festival ongoing, and with the shops full, the problem persisted for the ordinary citizen since he wasn’t allowed to buy many things. The study also tries to highlight the main strategies that people used to live outside the regime’s rules. Whispering, theft acts, letters sent to the authorities, personal relations with the foreign participants there were all part of these strategies.
