Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to emphasise the multifunctional character of the word stress in Russian language system. Being a suprasegmental unit of language it is interconnected with other subsystems of language. Russian word stress may be the only semantic differentiator of homonyms, binds words belonging to the same derivational type and indicates the grammatical meaning of the words
