Summary/Abstract: Counterfactual methods are more and more frequently used in the evaluation of projects and programmes financed by the European Union. One of them is Propensity Score Matching, which allows for the reduction of the selection bias while assessing the average treatment effect on treated. The key stage of Propensity Score Matching is the assessment of matching a control group to a treated group, since the quality of this matching influences the quality of the effects of impact evaluation. The article aims at emphasising the importance of this vital stage of the PSM procedure and supplements it with graphical methods enabling fast diagnosis and yielding a fuller picture of variable balance. The empirical example illustrates the use of the PSM method to evaluate the net effect of internships organised in 2013 by District Employment Office in Tarnów. The calculations were performed in R with Matching and MatchIt packages.
