Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of the paper is the comparative analysis of R&D expenditure in Poland and other European Union countries. The article presents the examinations of R&D expenditure in the European Union countries according to research and development expenditure by sectors of performance and comparative analysis of R&D expenditure in Poland in comparison with other European Union member states. There were used measures of position and cluster analysis on the base of which space groups were isolated, which indicated R&D expenditure in the European Union countries. The scope of examination concerns the period 2008–2012. The research was based on data from Eurostat. The results indicate a relatively high distance between Poland and the most developed European Union member states. It is necessary to take action to improve the innovation of economy.
