Summary/Abstract: As one of the oldest fields of learning, philology has developed its unique forms of expression, including a rich repertory of academic genres. Formalism came into being outside the academy and even in open opposition to it. Born in a Saint Petersburg cabaret shortly before World War I, it introduced the novelty and energy of non-canonical genres into literary scholarship, thus renewing it and consciously trying to turn it into what Nietzsche called a gay science. The relationship between the members of the OPOJAZ (Obshchestvo Izucheniia Poeticheskogo Yazyka, Society for the Study of Poetic Language) and contemporary art – often avant-garde art – clearly influenced the poetics and style of their own texts, giving them an unusual freshness and continuing relevance.
