Summary/Abstract: The concept of quality of life as well as methodology of the measurement arouse much controversy and are not clearly defined. The literature shows, however, that firstly, the concept of quality of life is identified with the concept of happiness, prosperity, good relations with family, friends, and secondly, it is also associated with the objective living conditions. The observed process of extending lasting of life causes that the vast majority of Poles live to old age, and the most rapidly extending phase of life is just the old age. Can it be expected that the evaluation of the quality of life of people at pre-retirement and retirement age (defined at work as “people 50+”) should not clearly differ from the assessment of younger people? Considering the demographic structure of the Łódź Voivodeship, in which the share of people aged 50+ belongs to the highest in Poland, the analysis in this area seems particularly needed. Subjective quality of life, which refers to the individual evaluation criteria (evaluation of the entire life, satisfaction with each of its fields, etc) was the authors’ area of interest. The aim of this paper is the evaluation of subjective quality of life of “older” residents of Łódź. The analysis was conducted based on the results of the questionnaire surveys conducted in 2010 on a sample of 497 inhabitants of Łódź. The study showed significant differences between the quality of life of people aged 50+ and younger inhabitants of the city.
