Summary/Abstract: In liberal democracies, where the state still plays a fundamental role as the main organizer of culture and values, patronage is not always reduced to mere sponsoring. In some cases, patronage may represent a form of opposition to the dominant cultural canon. After 1989 the transformations in the fields of politics and economics compelled the Catholic Church to re-think its own role in the new state. As a public actor, the Catholic Church was stimulated to find out new work strategies enabling a wider influence in the public sphere. By creating the “Work of the New Millennium” Foundation the Catholic Church aimed to gain a new role in the formation post-communist Poland’s culture and values.
