Summary/Abstract: We do not understand fully the situation of upbringing, its roads and roadless tracts, unless we invoke to the philosophy, remembering about its relations with pedagogy placed permanently in the horizons of the European thoughts. Since the beginning of philosophical thinking, there are noticeable two opposing philosophical traditions: realism and idealism. They have different ontology, epistemology, anthropology and axiology which determine the principles (the basis) of the specific pedagogy, the trend of pedagogy or the concept of upbringing. In the following article, we examine realism and idealism in the context of their influence on upbringing, indicating at the same time the consequences arising from it. The analysis, which has been conducted in the article, let us state that the true way of upbringing is connected with realism whereas idealism leads upbringing, as well as the pedagogy itself, astray.
