Surnames of Jews in Prussia (starting from letters A and B)

Summary/Abstract: The subject of this thesis concerns the surnames of Jews in Prussia from Ernst G. Lowenthal‘s publication entitled Juden in Preußen. Biographisches Verzeichnis. In this publication, an attempt was made to present the profile of the working population (lawyers, doctors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, film directors, directors of theatres, bankers, politicians, writers, etc.) in Prussia from 1780 to approximately 1930. The purpose of my article was to perform an etymological and structural analysis of the selected group of the discussed names. The discussed names have been classified into four groups. In the analyzed corpus there are many multi-motivational names. As far as their etymology is concerned, one may note the influence of German and Hebrew as well as Slavic languages.
