Summary/Abstract: The author takes the current discussion about „Cultural Fundamentalism" on the one hand and a „Plurality of Identities" on the other hand as a starting point of an unusual interpretation. Thereby, she focuses on two fictional texts: Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's “Undine” (1811) and Hans-Christian Andersen's “The Little Mermaid” (1837), and finds that both poets have a clear opinion about the above mentioned discourse - if one reads the texts as a clash of two different cultures
