Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyse some of the short stories by the Austrian writer Ferdinand von Saar paying special attention on the way of creation and consolidation of the gender image. What is observed by Saar's voyeur is the stylization and projection of secret male desires. At the times of crucial changes in the second half of the 19th century which shook the foundation of natural order of things and made the world unpredictable, the voyeur needs the clear images which would enable him to function in the reality becoming more and more chaotic. The voyeur's look creates the object in the way it fulfils his conception and is not threatening to his autonomy in the process of observation.
