The Czechs: a nation of heroes! Puppet sabotage, female intelligence, recese and other unexpected forms of resistance

Summary/Abstract: By subverting the Polish stereotype according to which the Czech people are cowards, Firlej and Balík present Czech culture in the context of resistance through laughter. Their analysis of little known material from literature, film, theatre, performance and history, allows the authors to outline diverging definitions of heroism in the Czech Republic and in Poland. Thus Firlej and Balík deconstruct the fixed and simplified notions about the Czech people that still prevail in Poland.
