Summary/Abstract: This is a Polish translation of the final chapter of David Damrosch’s book What is World Literature? (Princeton University Press, Princeton-Oxford 2003, pp. 281-303). Damrosch proposes a threefold definition of world literature by focusing on the world, the text, and the reader. Thus, world literature is, first, an elliptical refraction of national literatures; second, writing that gains in translation; and third, not a set canon of texts but a mode of reading – a form of detached engagement with worlds beyond our own place and time.
