Summary/Abstract: In this article Siwiec takes up Hans Robert Jauss’s comparative approach to Norwid and Baudelaire as two poets on the threshold of modernity. Both were ambivalent towards Modernity as well as Romanticism, a contemporary movement that was also part of a broader tradition. Both Norwid and Baudelaire described their relationship with their great predecessors as stigmatizing. Consequently, Siwiec explores the two poets’ ambivalence and fearfulness with regard to the Romantic tradition, arguing that their poetic works, aesthetic essays and correspondence the stigma of Romanticism gives rise to two contradictory tendencies, namely rupture, polymorphism and decentration on the one hand, and a striving towards the centre on the other.
