Janus Korczak’s last ten notes

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the final part of the ghetto diary of Janusz Korczak (the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit). Witkowska-Krych examines the ten final entries, dated 4 September 1942, for both their composition and content. Building on close readings of selected passages, she suggests that the arrangement of Korczak’s notes do not correspond to the well-known and frequently reprinted version. She discusses possible reasons for this misrepresentation and finally suggests a rearrangement of the notes. The new sequence opens up new readings of this text, which has hitherto been understood to allow only one possible interpretation.
