Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the “politics of nature” as practiced at the former Auschwitz--Birkenau Concentration Camp. Małczyński discusses German Lebensraum politics in conjunction with the concomitant images of nature; he examines the museification of the former camp site, and discusses related practices of dealing with nature as well as the role of landscape in shaping visitors’ experience of the Memorial site. Małczyński suggests that conservation practices such as the use of chemicals to control the spread of vegetation bring to mind the model of ‘garden culture’ as introduced by Zygmunt Bauman in Modernity and the Holocaust.
