Summary/Abstract: The article examines the literacy and educational level of the Russian population at the turn of XIX—XX centuries. These figures are given in comparison to age, socio-professional and age-sex composition — for men, women and children. The factors which influenced the status and the development of literacy in different regions and provinces of the country are identified
