Summary/Abstract: The article presents the collection and comparison of the results of studies conducted in order to better understand the structure of the local community in one of Warsaw Mokotów District housing estates. The paper presents the theoretical underpinnings which help build up an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the group whose members are commonly considered as “misfits”. Based on research material, some criminological, sociological and anthropological conclusions are formulated. The study covered individuals who spend their free time nearby dumpsters, and differ in that respect from the rest of the community members who would tend to live in a routine and acceptable manner. The paper discusses the mechanisms of informal and formal social control: a founding element of the definition of social norms and the limits of deviance.
