Summary/Abstract: Traditionally atheism has been conceived and construed as a rejection of religion and religious faith. However, in his Bampton Lectures at Columbia University under the title of ‘Religion, Atheism, and Faith’, Paul Ricoeur offers an interpretation of atheism somewhat reminiscent of Hegelian dialectical approach whereby atheism as an antithesis to religion paves the way for a paradoxical synthesis: namely, a new articulation of faith. The purpose of this paper is therefore to appraise Ricoeur’s rendition of the religious significance of atheism against his problematic concepts of religion and atheism.
