Summary/Abstract: The text of The Bread of Life discourse has been an object of many theological and literary analyses. One of the most interesting trends of the research is identifying some historical actions in the whole text. The Author of the Fourth Gospel shows us complex historical situation of Christian communities in the first century. Careful reading of the text makes it possible to distinguish four characteristic groups of disputants. These groups indicate the problems of St. John’s communities at the end of the first century: 1. misunderstanding of Jesus’ miracles shown in relation to the synoptic tradition, 2. controversy over the Synagoque, 3. crisis connected with accepting the truth about the Eucharist, 4. picture of the Church at the end of the century according to St. John in the context of the existing crisis.
